Based on the gross value of the premiums that it collects from customers across the globe, Aviva is the sixth largest insurance group in the world. In addition to health insurance, the group sells life and pension products in Europe and the United Kingdom, as well as various other products internationally.

Aviva came into existence in 2002 when CGU (which was itself the product of a merger between General Accident and Commercial Union 4 years previously) merged with Norwich Union. They are currently the biggest sponsor of athletics in the UK and also support rugby and ITV drama premieres.

As well as providing private health insurance plans that give customers access to private medical treatment when they need it, Aviva also supplies cash plans, which reimburse clients for medical costs they have incurred, and income protection policies to help people that need to take time off work due to illness or injury.
